Letter by letter: I is .., L is .-.., O is ---, V is ...-, E is ., Y is -.--, O is --- and U is ..-. Written out with a space between letters and a slash between words, the whole phrase is .. / .-.. --- ...- . / -.-- --- ..- - 21 symbols, which at a comfortable 15 words per minute takes about six seconds to send.
Morse has carried this message since the telegraph, and it still does: on bracelets, where the dots are round beads and the dashes long ones; in tattoos, usually as a single line of dots and dashes down a wrist or a rib; and in the kind of note that is only readable by the person who knows how. The private-yet-public quality is the point - to anyone else it is just a pattern.
