How to write I love you in Morse code
Letter by letter: I is .., L is .-.., O is ---, V is ...-, E is ., Y is -.--, O is --- and U is ..-. Morse has carried this message since the telegraph, and it still does: on bracelets, where the dots are round beads and the dashes long ones; in tattoos, usually as a single line of dots and dashes down a wrist or a rib; and in the kind of note that is only readable by the person who knows how. Mistakes to avoid on a keepsake
- Dropping the word gaps. On a bracelet, keep a visible space (or a spacer bead) between the three words or the message can be misread.
- Mixing up the dots and dashes for V and U. V is
...-(three dots then a dash) and U is..-; they are the two letters most often engraved wrong. - Trusting a font. Some typefaces draw a hyphen and an en dash almost the same length; check a tattoo design against the symbols here, not against how it looks in a mock-up.
- Reading Morse from the wrong end. A line of dots and dashes on a wrist has a start; make sure whoever wears it knows which end that is.
