More Practice, Bigger Numbers

Two and a half million: 2.5 * 10^6. The one digit after the point uses the first hop; the remaining five hops fill with zeros: 2500000.
This is where scientific notation earns its keep. Comparing 2.5 * 10^6 with 9.8 * 10^5 takes one glance at the exponents: 6 beats 5, so the first is bigger, no zero counting required. Standard form makes you count; scientific notation makes you look.
Calculators and programming languages print 2.5e6 for the same thing: the e is the “times 10 to the power of” said quickly. You will meet it constantly.
