Repeated Multiplication

Multiplication is repeated addition: 3 * 4 means four threes added together. One floor up, a power is repeated multiplication: 2^4 means four twos multiplied together, 2 * 2 * 2 * 2, which is 16.
The number being multiplied is the base; the small raised number counts the copies and is called the exponent. In 2^4 the base is 2, the exponent is 4, and the whole thing is read "two to the fourth". The exponent counts factors, not multiplications: 2^4 has four factors of 2 in it.
A power is a single number wearing compact clothing. Evaluating it means taking the clothing off: 2^4 = 16, 5^2 = 25, 10^3 = 1000. Everything in this section, every rule and every shortcut, unpacks to counting factors.
