Energy in Food

Part of the Food Chemistry and the Lab section of Coddy's Chemistry journey. Lesson 13 of 27.

A food label gives energy in kJ. Per gram: fat 37 kJ/g37\ \mathrm{kJ/g}, carbohydrate and protein 17 kJ/g17\ \mathrm{kJ/g}.

E=m×eE = m \times e

Burning food under water measures its energy. The water takes in q=m⋅c⋅ΔTq = m \cdot c \cdot \Delta T, with c = 4.18 J/(g⋅K)4.18\ \mathrm{J/(g·K)} for water.
