Tests for Ions

Part of the Food Chemistry and the Lab section of Coddy's Chemistry journey. Lesson 23 of 27.

A precipitate is an insoluble solid formed when two ions meet.

Cl⁻: silver nitrate, white AgCl. SO₄²⁻: barium chloride, white BaSO₄. CO₃²⁻: fizzes with acid (CO₂).

A beaker of barium chloride solution beside a beaker of a sulfate solution

Barium ions and sulfate ions form a white precipitate, BaSO₄

The precipitate's formula balances the charges: Ba²⁺ and SO₄²⁻ are 1 : 1.
