Peptide Bonds

Part of the Food Chemistry and the Lab section of Coddy's Chemistry journey. Lesson 10 of 27.

COOH of one amino acid + NH₂ of the next gives a peptide bond, C(=O)-NH, and water. It is an amide group.

Two glycine units joined: the C(=O)-NH link between them, the peptide bond, is shaded

The peptide bond is an amide group, C(=O)-N

A protein has hundreds of peptide bonds, a free NH₂ at one end and a free COOH at the other.

Digestion hydrolyzes the peptide bonds back into amino acids.
