Saturated and Unsaturated

Part of the Food Chemistry and the Lab section of Coddy's Chemistry journey. Lesson 6 of 27.

Saturated: only single C-C bonds. Unsaturated: at least one C=C double bond.

But-2-enoic acid: a short chain with one carbon-carbon double bond and a carboxyl group

One C=C double bond makes a chain unsaturated

A double bond bends the chain, so the molecules pack loosely: unsaturated fats are oils (liquid), saturated fats are solid.

Bromine water turns from orange to colorless with a C=C double bond.
