Sprint
Lesson 17 of 20 in Coddy's Roblox Game: Escape the Dark course.
Sometimes you have to run. Holding Shift (or a phone button) sprints at Settings.SprintSpeed while there is stamina: it drains while you sprint and comes back while you walk. Empty, the sprint stops until you press again.
This one is all on the client. A player's own character is theirs: Roblox lets a LocalScript set its Humanoid's WalkSpeed, and the movement follows. ContextActionService tells the script when the key goes down (Begin) and up (End):
ContextActionService:BindAction("Sprint", function(_, state)
sprinting = state == Enum.UserInputState.Begin
end, true, Enum.KeyCode.LeftShift)Every frame, dt is the seconds since the last one, so stamina changes by its rate times dt.
Challenge
HardIn DarkClient: get ContextActionService; keep sprinting and stamina (starting at Settings.StaminaMax); bind "Sprint" to LeftShift with a touch button. In the Heartbeat: while sprinting with stamina, drain Settings.StaminaDrain * dt and set WalkSpeed to Settings.SprintSpeed (at 0, stop sprinting); otherwise refill Settings.StaminaRegen * dt up to the max and set WalkSpeed to Settings.WalkSpeed. Size hud.Stamina.Fill to the stamina.
Press Play and hold Shift. Then Check.
