Weather App: Weather Icons

Part of the Data and the Network section of Coddy's Flutter journey. Lesson 25 of 27.

People read a sun faster than the word Sunny. Turn each condition into an icon with one function, and use it everywhere a condition shows.

A switch expression picks a value for each case, with _ for anything else:

IconData iconFor(String condition) {
  return switch (condition) {
    'Sunny' => Icons.wb_sunny,
    'Cloudy' => Icons.cloud,
    _ => Icons.help_outline,
  };
}

The cases match the server's text exactly, capitals included: 'sunny' would never match Sunny. The _ case keeps the app working if the server one day sends a condition you did not plan for.

Challenge

Medium

Add icons:

  • an iconFor method: Sunny is Icons.wb_sunny, Cloudy is Icons.cloud, Rainy is Icons.umbrella, Snowy is Icons.ac_unit, anything else Icons.help_outline
  • under the city, the current condition's icon, size 96, Colors.orange
  • at the start of each forecast row, that day's icon, then 16 pixels of space
