When the AI Ignores You
Part of the Fundamentals section of Coddy's AI Prompts journey — lesson 16 of 23.
Sometimes you give the AI clear instructions—format, length, tone—and it just... doesn't follow them. You asked for three items, you got five. You wanted plain text, you got bullet points anyway.
This happens, and it's not your fault.
AI models are trained on patterns, and some patterns are deeply ingrained. The AI has a strong tendency toward being "helpful," which sometimes means adding more than you asked for. It might think a list is clearer than a sentence, even when you specifically requested a sentence.
When the AI ignores your instructions, try these approaches:
Repeat the constraint. Place it at both the beginning and end of your prompt:
In exactly one sentence, no lists: explain what a rainbow is. Remember: one sentence only, no formatting.
Be more emphatic. Words like "must," "only," and "strictly" can help:
You must respond with exactly 3 items. No more, no less.
Rephrase the request. Sometimes a different wording clicks better with the model. Instead of "no bullet points," try "write as a flowing paragraph."
Don't assume your first prompt is final. Prompt engineering often involves iteration—adjusting and retrying until you get what you need. If the AI ignores you once, tweak your approach and try again.
