Your First Real Task

Part of the Fundamentals section of Coddy's AI Prompts journey — lesson 4 of 23.

Now that you understand what AI is (and isn't), let's put it to work on something useful.

AI shines when you give it a clear task. Instead of just chatting or asking simple questions, try asking it to actually do something for you. This is where prompt engineering starts to feel powerful.

For example, instead of asking:

Tell me about emails

You could ask:

Write a short, polite email to my landlord asking when the broken heater will be fixed.

See the difference? The second prompt gives the AI a specific job: write an email, make it polite, keep it short, and include the purpose. The AI now has enough direction to produce something genuinely useful.

This is the core of prompt engineering: turning vague ideas into clear instructions. The more specific you are about what you want, the better the AI can deliver.

Challenge

You just moved to a new apartment and the Wi-Fi isn't working. Ask the AI to write a short, polite message to your landlord about this issue.

Don't just ask the AI about Wi-Fi problems — give it a specific task with clear details.

The response must:

  • Be a message (contain a greeting like Hi, Dear, or Hello)
  • Mention the actual problem (Wi-Fi or wifi or internet)
  • Be polite (contain please or thank you or thanks or appreciate)
  • Be under 200 words

Tip: Remember the lesson — the more specific your instructions, the better the result. Tell the AI exactly what kind of message you want.

Cheat sheet

AI works best when given a clear, specific task rather than vague questions.

The core of prompt engineering is turning vague ideas into clear instructions. The more specific you are about what you want, the better the AI can deliver.

Instead of asking general questions:

Tell me about emails

Give the AI a specific job with clear direction:

Write a short, polite email to my landlord asking when the broken heater will be fixed.

This approach provides the AI with:

  • A specific format (email)
  • Tone requirements (polite)
  • Length guidance (short)
  • Clear purpose (ask about heater repair)
