Play Again

Part of the The Game Loop section of Coddy's Pygame journey. Lesson 31 of 32.

After Game over the player should not have to restart the program. Let R start a new game: put every value that changed back where it started.

elif event.key == pygame.K_r and (lives == 0 or score == 10):
    score = 0
    lives = 3
    basket.x = 200
    block.y = -20
    block.x = random.randint(0, 460)

The condition matters. Without (lives == 0 or score == 10), R would wipe the score in the middle of a game. The brackets group the two endings, so the and applies to both.

Tell the player the key: show Press R to play again under the result.

Challenge

Medium
  1. In the KEYDOWN branch, when the key is pygame.K_r and the game has ended, set the score to 0, the lives to 3, basket.x to 200, and drop a new block from y = -20 at a random x.
  2. When the game has ended, also show Press R to play again centred at (240, 200).
