When a Is Not 1

Part of the Quadratics & Complex Numbers section of Coddy's Algebra 2 journey. Lesson 7 of 48.

Completing the square needs x2{x}^{2} with no number in front. So when a is not 1, divide every term by a first. Dividing both sides by the same number, not 0, keeps the same solutions.

2x2−4x−6=02{x}^{2}-4x-6 = 0

Divide every term by 2: x2−2x−3=0{x}^{2}-2x-3 = 0. Completing the square gives (x−1)2=4{\left(x-1\right)}^{2} = 4. So x = 3 or x = -1.
