Preparing a Solution

Part of the Stoichiometry section of Coddy's Chemistry journey. Lesson 13 of 41.

To make a solution, work backwards from the recipe: 200 mL200\ \mathrm{mL} of 0.5 M0.5\ \mathrm{M} NaCl. First the moles: n=c×V=0.1 moln = c \times V = 0.1\ \mathrm{mol}.

Then the mass, with the molar mass 58.5 g/mol58.5\ \mathrm{g/mol}: m=n×M=5.85 gm = n \times M = 5.85\ \mathrm{g}.

A balance showing 5.85 g of sodium chloride beside a beaker of 0.5 M solution

Weigh 5.85 g of NaCl for 200 mL of 0.5 M

Dissolve the solid in a little water, then add water up to the 200 mL200\ \mathrm{mL} mark. V is the volume of the finished solution, not of the water.

A gardener's recipe calls for 200 mL200\ \mathrm{mL} of 0.4 M0.4\ \mathrm{M} ammonium sulfate, (NH₄)₂SO₄, a fertilizer whose molar mass is 132 g/mol132\ \mathrm{g/mol}. What mass of ammonium sulfate must be weighed?
