Solve, Then Draw
Part of the Inequalities & Absolute Value section of Coddy's Algebra journey. Lesson 9 of 64.
To solve x + 1 > 3, subtract 1 from both sides to get x > 2. On the number line, draw an open dot at 2 and shade to the right.
Drawing the solutions has two parts. First, solve for x to find the endpoint. Then decide the two details of the picture. The dot is open for a strict sign and closed for a sign with "or equal to". The shading goes the way the sign points once x is written first. Always solve first. The picture comes from the answer, not from the original inequality.
