Conjugate Pairs
Part of the Acids and Bases section of Coddy's Chemistry journey. Lesson 4 of 30.
An acid and what is left after it gives its proton are a conjugate pair: they differ by one H⁺. HCl and Cl⁻; NH₄⁺ and NH₃.
Conjugate base: one H fewer, charge one lower. Conjugate acid: one H more, charge one higher.
H₂SO₄ → HSO₄⁻ → SO₄²⁻
Each arrow is one proton taken away.
Challenge
Sulfuric acid gives away its protons one at a time. Write the conjugate base of H₂SO₄.
