Water as Acid and Base
Part of the Acids and Bases section of Coddy's Chemistry journey. Lesson 5 of 30.
Water is a base with HCl (it takes H⁺) and an acid with NH₃ (it gives H⁺). It is amphoteric.
Pure water ionizes itself a little:
H₂O + H₂O ⇌ H₃O⁺ + OH⁻
Equal numbers of H₃O⁺ and OH⁻: pure water is neutral.
Challenge
In pure water, some molecules take a proton from a neighbour. Write the conjugate acid of water, the ion a water molecule becomes when it takes a proton.
Try it yourself
This lesson includes a short quiz. Start the lesson to answer it and track your progress.
