Net Ionic Equations
Part of the Acids and Bases section of Coddy's Chemistry journey. Lesson 19 of 30.
Ions that are the same before and after are spectator ions: Na⁺ and Cl⁻ in HCl + NaOH. Leave them out:
H₃O⁺ + OH⁻ → 2H₂O
A solid is written whole, since it is not split into ions:
Mg(OH)₂(s) + 2H₃O⁺ → Mg²⁺ + 4H₂O
Challenge
Write the net ionic equation of any strong acid with any strong base, balanced.
Try it yourself
H3O+OH−H2O
This lesson includes a short quiz. Start the lesson to answer it and track your progress.
