Neutralization
Part of the Acids and Bases section of Coddy's Chemistry journey. Lesson 18 of 30.
Neutralization: H₃O⁺ from the acid and OH⁻ from the base make water.
HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H₂O
Acid + hydroxide → salt + water. The salt holds the base's metal ion and the acid's negative ion: H₂SO₄ gives sulfates, HNO₃ nitrates, HCl chlorides.
Acid + base → salt + water
Challenge
Sulfuric acid spilled on a lab bench is neutralized with sodium hydroxide solution. Balance the equation.
Try it yourself
H2SO4NaOHNa2SO4H2O
