Strong Acids

Part of the Acids and Bases section of Coddy's Chemistry journey. Lesson 7 of 30.

A strong acid ionizes completely: every molecule gives its proton.

HCl + H₂O → H₃O⁺ + Cl⁻

For a strong acid with one proton, [H₃O⁺] = the acid's concentration. Square brackets mean concentration: [H₃O⁺] is in mol/L.

Strong acids to know: HCl, HBr, HI, HNO₃, H₂SO₄, HClO₄.
