Ions in Acid Solutions

Part of the Acids and Bases section of Coddy's Chemistry journey. Lesson 9 of 30.

A strong acid or base splits completely. Read the ions off the formula:

H₂SO₄ + 2H₂O → 2H₃O⁺ + SO₄²⁻

In 0.2 M H₂SO₄: [H₃O⁺] = 0.4 M and [SO₄²⁻] = 0.2 M.

Strong bases too: Ba(OH)₂ → Ba²⁺ + 2OH⁻, so 0.05 M Ba(OH)₂ has [OH⁻] = 0.1 M.

A beaker of 0.2 M sulfuric acid

0.2 M H₂SO₄
