Save Your Cash

Lesson 17 of 18 in Coddy's Roblox Game: Factory Tycoon course.

Nobody plays a tycoon that forgets them. A DataStore keeps a table per player, under their UserId: their Cash and Rebirths, saved when they leave and loaded when they join.

factoryStore:SetAsync(player.UserId, { Cash = 120, Rebirths = 1 })
local saved = factoryStore:GetAsync(player.UserId)
print(saved.Cash) --> 120

Calls to a DataStore can fail, so each one is wrapped in pcall. Saving runs on PlayerRemoving, and for everyone in game:BindToClose, which runs when the server shuts down.

When the owner leaves, the factory is also freed: reset, the claim pad green again, the sign back to its message, ready for the next player. That is the second use of resetFactory, and the reason startDropper guards against running twice: a new claim starts the first dropper again while its old loop is still going.

Challenge

Hard

Save the player and free the factory:

  1. Get DataStoreService and a DataStore named Factory.
  2. In PlayerAdded, after the leaderstats: load their table with GetAsync(player.UserId) in a pcall, and if found, set Cash and Rebirths from it.
  3. Write saveFactory(player): SetAsync(player.UserId, { Cash = ..., Rebirths = ... }) in a pcall.
  4. On PlayerRemoving: save; and if they own the factory, set owner to nil, reset the factory, make the claim pad green and Neon again, and put the claim message back on the sign. Save everyone in game:BindToClose too.

Press Play, earn, Stop, Play again: your Cash comes back. Then Check.
