A Locked Door

Part of the Worlds section of Coddy's Pygame journey. Lesson 34 of 35.

A door closes the tunnel near the end of the cave, and a key lies on the floor before it. The door is two D tiles. Add their Rects to walls, so the collision code stops the player, and to tiles with door_img, so they are drawn. Keep them in a list doors too.

The K tile is the key, one Rect named key. Touching it sets has_key = True; from then on the key is drawn in the top bar instead of on the floor.

A player pushed against the door touches it but does not overlap it, so test with a Rect 4 pixels wider on each side:

if has_key and doors and player.inflate(8, 0).colliderect(doors[0]):
    for door in doors:
        walls.remove(door)
    tiles = [(image, rect) for image, rect in tiles if rect not in doors]
    doors = []

The door leaves both lists, so it is neither solid nor drawn. The list comprehension builds a new tiles with every pair whose Rect is not a door.

Challenge

Hard
  1. Load key.png and door.png into key_img and door_img; make doors = [] and has_key = False.
  2. In the map loop: for K, key = rect; for D, append the Rect to walls and doors and (door_img, rect) to tiles.
  3. Each frame, after the blobs: touching key sets has_key = True; with the key, touching a door removes all doors as shown.
  4. Draw the key at its x minus camera_x while has_key is False, and at (130, 8) once it is True.
