Stomp or Be Hit

Part of the Worlds section of Coddy's Pygame journey. Lesson 25 of 35.

Touching a blob should matter, in two ways. Land on top of it and the blob is beaten. Walk into it and the player is hurt.

The difference is how the player arrived. It came from above if it is falling, vel_y > 0, and its feet are still above the blob's middle:

for blob in blobs:
    if player.colliderect(blob.rect):
        if vel_y > 0 and player.bottom < blob.rect.centery:
            blob.kill()
            vel_y = -8
        else:
            player.midbottom = start
            vel_y = 0

blob.kill() removes the sprite from the group, so it is no longer updated or drawn. vel_y = -8 is a small bounce, which tells the player the stomp worked and lets them chain one into a jump. Anything else is a hit from the side or below, and the player goes back to the start, as after a fall.

Loop over the group to test each blob. kill() inside the loop is safe here, because the loop runs over the group's sprites as they were when it started.

Challenge

Medium
  1. After the blobs move, loop over blobs.
  2. When the player collides with a blob's Rect: if vel_y > 0 and player.bottom < blob.rect.centery, call blob.kill() and set vel_y = -8.
  3. Otherwise set player.midbottom = start and vel_y = 0.
