Follow the Explorer
Part of the Worlds section of Coddy's Pygame journey. Lesson 30 of 35.
The cave is four windows wide, so the camera follows the explorer, as in A Scrolling Camera. After the player has moved, centre the camera on it and keep it inside the level:
camera_x = player.centerx - WIDTH // 2
camera_x = max(0, min(camera_x, level_width - WIDTH))Draw every tile and the player at its x minus camera_x. The forest background is far away, so it slides a third as fast, repeating every 72 pixels:
shift = camera_x // 3 % 72
for y in range(0, HEIGHT, 72):
for x in range(-shift, WIDTH, 72):
screen.blit(background, (x, y))Make level_width = len(LEVEL[0]) * TILE and camera_x = 0 before the loop.
Challenge
Easy- Before the loop, make
level_widthfrom the map andcamera_x = 0. - At the end of each frame's update, set
camera_xto follow the player and clamp it to0andlevel_width - WIDTH. - Draw the background with
shift = camera_x // 3 % 72, starting each row at-shift. - Blit tiles at
(rect.x - camera_x, rect.y)and the player at(player.x - camera_x, player.y).
