How to read a sad kaomoji

The mouth turns down: ︹ is a small frown, ‸ a pursed unhappy mouth, ︿ a wobble, and ﹏ a trembling lip. Eyes stay small or fall: ´ and slanted marks over the eyes read as downcast brows, and the (´-ω-) shape is the classic face looking at the floor.

A single stroke changes the intensity. (´;ω;) has one tear at each eye and reads as disappointed; take the tears away for (´-ω-) and it is merely gloomy; add streams of tears and you have moved to the Crying page. (-‸ლ), with a hand over the face, is the facepalm - sad about something someone did.

The board above opens on the Sad category. Tap a face to copy it, or switch tabs for crying, angry or confused faces - the moods sit next to each other for a reason.

What to know about sad text faces

  • A downward mouth (︹ ‸ ︿) is the core of every sad face; the eyes set how sad - dots are quiet, ´ ` brows are downcast, T T are tears.
  • The semicolon ; or ; beside the face is a single tear or a sweat drop - (-_-;) is uneasy, (´;ω;`) is disappointed. More than one tear and the face is crying, which has its own page.
  • ლ is a Georgian letter used as a hand: (-‸ლ) is a facepalm, sad about someone else's mistake.
  • Fullwidth spaces and brackets keep the face wide and slow; a compact sad face like (;_;) reads as smaller and quieter.

Sad kaomoji examples

Replying to bad news

Disappointed

(´;ω;`)

Quiet

(◞‸◟)

The tears say you feel it; the small frown says you are sorry to hear it without making the moment about you.

When plans fall through

Sulking

(╯︵╰,)

Facepalm

(-‸ლ)

Sulking is for plans that fell through; the facepalm is for plans that fell through because of something obvious.

Common sad kaomoji mistakes

  • Using a crying face when you mean mildly sad - (╥﹏╥) reads as heartbroken, which is too much for a cancelled coffee. Keep the tears for the Crying page.
  • Pairing a sad face with an exclamation mark - the face is quiet by design and the ! fights it.
  • Sending (-‸ლ) as sympathy - the facepalm judges, it does not console. Use (´;ω;`) when you are sad for someone.

Sad kaomoji FAQ

Which kaomoji is sad but not crying?
(´-ω-), (︶︹︺) and (◞‸◟) are sad with dry eyes. Add a single ; for disappointed - (´;ω;) - and you are still short of crying, which starts at two streams of tears like (T_T).
What does the semicolon in (´;ω;`) mean?
A single tear or a bead of sweat at each eye. One ; is disappointment or unease; the crying faces use T, ╥ or ゚ for streams.
What is the sad face with a hand over it?
(-‸ლ) is a facepalm. The ლ is a Georgian letter that looks like a hand, so the face is covering its eyes at something someone did.
Is there a sad kaomoji for feeling let down or sulking?
(╯︵╰,) is sulking, (╯_╰) is let down, and (ノ_<。) is hurt. All three keep the mouth turned down and the eyes closed, which reads as pouting rather than weeping.
