From Reply to Decision

Part of the AI Decisions section of Coddy's AI Prompts journey. Lesson 1 of 22.

In Prompting Techniques you asked the AI to write a label and hoped it kept to your list. Apps need something stricter: a decision. You give the AI a text, a question and your options. It never writes a reply. It picks one option and says how likely each one is.

A school office sorts parent emails. Question: What is this email about? Options: absence, trip, lunch. For Mia has a fever and will stay home today, the AI answers:

absence ████████████████████ 100%
lunch ░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░ 0%
trip ░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░ 0%

The app reads absence and files the email. Nothing to clean up.

Every question has an id (here topic) so your code can read its answer. The options are names your code knows. The question itself is plain words: what should the AI decide?

A web shop routes support messages to three teams. The options are ready: billing, shipping and tech, each with a description. The question is missing.

Write the question so every test message reaches the right team.
