Menu and Best Score
Part of the Game Rules section of Coddy's Pygame journey. Lesson 29 of 29.
Sky Runner gets the rules from this section: a menu, a new game on a key, and the best score.
reset() makes a new runner and an empty group, sets the score and the speed back and restarts both timers. The game starts on "menu", and best is set once, outside reset().
Space does three jobs now, one per state:
if state == "play":
runner.jump()
elif state == "menu":
reset()
state = "play"
elif pygame.time.get_ticks() - over_time > 500:
reset()
state = "play"Space is the jump key, so a player is often pressing it at the moment of a crash. Without a wait the game would restart before they saw the result. Remember the time of the crash in over_time and accept Space on the game over screen only 500 ms later.
A small show(text, text_font, y) function draws a line centred at x 320, since the menu and the game over screen need five of them.
Challenge
Hard- Write
reset()for the runner, the group,speed,scoreand both timers; call it before the loop and setstate = "menu",best = 0andover_time = 0. - On the menu show
Sky Runner(size 48) andPress Space to start; Space or Up starts a game. - On a crash, update
bestand setover_time. - On the game over screen show
Game over,Best: 00120(five digits) andPress Space to play again; Space starts a new game, but only 500 ms after the crash. - Show the score only during play and game over.
