Anchor Points
Part of the Game Rules section of Coddy's Pygame journey. Lesson 7 of 29.
A score drawn at (10, 10) starts at the left edge. To end at the right edge instead, you need its width, and the width changes as the number grows. A Rect does the sums for you.
text.get_rect() takes keyword arguments for any of its points: center, topleft, topright, midtop, midbottom and more. The Rect is placed so that point lands where you say:
score_rect = score_text.get_rect(topright=(470, 10))
screen.blit(score_text, score_rect)Now the score's right edge stays at 470 whether it reads 0 or 1000.
Text on a busy background is easier to read on a plate. inflate(12, 8) returns a copy of the Rect 12 pixels wider and 8 taller, with the same centre. Draw it first, then the text on top:
pygame.draw.rect(screen, PLATE, score_rect.inflate(12, 8))The plate's right edge is 6 pixels past the text, at 476, and its top is 4 pixels above, at 6.
Challenge
Medium- Add
PLATE = (60, 60, 90). - Place the score with
topright=(470, 10)and draw aPLATErectangle behind it: its Rect inflated by (12, 8). - On the menu, draw a
PLATErectangle behindMeteor Dodge: the title's Rect, centred at (240, 140), inflated by (24, 12).
