Safe After a Hit

Part of the Game Rules section of Coddy's Pygame journey. Lesson 10 of 29.

Stand under a rock in this version. The rock no longer jumps back to the top when it hits, it falls through the player, and it touches the player for many frames in a row. Each of those frames takes a life, so one rock ends the game.

Many games give a short safe time after a hit. To know how long it has been, ask the clock. pygame.time.get_ticks() is the number of milliseconds since pygame.init(). Remember the moment of the hit, and subtract:

now = pygame.time.get_ticks()
if rock.colliderect(player) and now - hit_time > 1000:
    hit_time = now
    lives -= 1

Start hit_time at -2000 in reset(), so the first hit always counts.

Show the safe time by blinking. get_ticks() // 100 % 2 is 0 for one tenth of a second, then 1, then 0 again, so drawing the player only when it is 0 makes it flash:

safe = pygame.time.get_ticks() - hit_time < 1000
if not safe or pygame.time.get_ticks() // 100 % 2 == 0:
    pygame.draw.rect(screen, (255, 196, 0), player)

Challenge

Medium
  1. In reset(), set hit_time = -2000 (add it to the global line).
  2. A hit takes a life only when more than 1000 ms passed since hit_time; then set hit_time to now.
  3. For 1000 ms after a hit, draw the player only when pygame.time.get_ticks() // 100 % 2 == 0.
