Speed That Ramps
Part of the Game Rules section of Coddy's Pygame journey. Lesson 15 of 29.
A game that never changes gets dull, and one that starts hard loses new players. Start gentle and get harder the longer the player lasts.
The time since the game started gives the speed. reset() remembers when that was, and each frame works out the speed from it:
seconds = (pygame.time.get_ticks() - start_time) // 1000
speed = 3 + seconds // 5seconds // 5 grows by 1 every five seconds, so rocks fall 3 pixels a frame at first, 4 after five seconds, 5 after ten. Whole steps keep the speed a whole number, which a Rect needs: it stores whole pixels, so rock.y += 3.5 would lose the half.
Enter and R both call reset(), so the clock starts again with each game, however long the menu was showing.
Challenge
Medium- In
reset(), setstart_timetopygame.time.get_ticks(). - In
play_frame(), work outsecondssincestart_timeandspeed = 3 + seconds // 5. - Move every rock down by
speedinstead of 3.
