Count Down to Go

Part of the Game Rules section of Coddy's Pygame journey. Lesson 14 of 29.

Pressing Enter drops the player straight into falling rocks. A countdown, 3, 2, 1, gives them a moment to get ready. It is one more state, "countdown", that draws the game without moving it, with a number on top.

The number comes from the time since the countdown started:

left = 3 - (pygame.time.get_ticks() - countdown_start) // 1000

In the first second // gives 0, so left is 3; then 2, then 1. When it reaches 0, play begins:

def countdown_frame():
    global state
    left = 3 - (pygame.time.get_ticks() - countdown_start) // 1000
    draw_game()
    if left > 0:
        number = big_font.render(str(left), True, WHITE)
        screen.blit(number, number.get_rect(center=(240, 170)))
    else:
        state = "play"

Enter and R both start a countdown, so a small function sets the state and remembers the start time:

def start_countdown():
    global state, countdown_start
    state = "countdown"
    countdown_start = pygame.time.get_ticks()

Challenge

Medium
  1. Write start_countdown() and countdown_frame() as shown, and call countdown_frame() when the state is "countdown".
  2. Enter on the menu and R on the game over screen call start_countdown() instead of setting "play".
  3. The countdown shows 3, 2 and 1 for one second each, centred at (240, 170).
