Weighted Picks

Part of the Game Rules section of Coddy's Pygame journey. Lesson 18 of 29.

A game is more interesting when not everything that falls is the same. Here half the drops are small rocks, some are big rocks, and a few are gems worth 5 points. random.choice picks every item as often as the others. random.choices takes weights, how often each one comes up:

def pick_kind():
    return random.choices(["small", "big", "gem"], weights=[5, 3, 2])[0]

The weights 5, 3 and 2 add up to 10, so out of every 10 drops about 5 are small, 3 big and 2 gems. Weights are proportions, not percentages: [50, 30, 20] means the same.

random.choices can pick several at once, so it always returns a list, even for one pick. The [0] takes the item out of it.

Each kind then becomes a different Rect. Gems go in a list of their own, gems, because touching one is good news. The starter already moves, draws and catches gems; nothing drops one yet.

Challenge

Medium
  1. Write pick_kind(): it returns "small", "big" or "gem" with weights 5, 3 and 2.
  2. On SPAWN, drop what it picks: a small rock 24 by 24, a big rock 40 by 40 (x from 0 to 440, y -40), or a gem 20 by 20 (x from 0 to 460, y -20) added to gems.
