All the Escape Squares
Part of the Tactics section of Coddy's Chess journey. Lesson 40 of 48.
The discipline that makes two-move mates reliable: before you commit, list every legal answer - the pawn moves too, and the far-off guards you hope are asleep. A move can be forcing without a check: taking squares away removes answers just as surely. Five answers, five mates - then, and only then, it is real.
