The Relative Pin

Part of the Tactics section of Coddy's Chess journey. Lesson 15 of 48.

Not every pin aims at a king. Line up on a piece with the enemy queen behind it and moving stays legal - it just costs nine points. A relative pin is a threat that works by being believed: the piece can run, and it will not, so whatever it guards is up for grabs.
