Recap: Mate Patterns

Part of the Tactics section of Coddy's Chess journey. Lesson 37 of 48.

Four patterns, one question underneath all of them: which squares does the king have, and who covers each one? Back rank: remove the guard. Smothered: his own army, your knight. Queen beside the king: touching and protected. Edge mates: fence, then check. Sometimes you hand something over so his own army finishes the job.
