Internal Resistance
Part of the Electricity and Magnetism section of Coddy's Physics journey. Lesson 26 of 51.
A real battery has an EMF ε and an internal resistance r:
ε = I (R + r)
The voltage at its ends drops as the current grows:
V = ε − I r
Its efficiency is V/ε = R/(R + r).
Challenge
A battery with EMF 12 V and internal resistance 0.5 Ω is connected to a 5.5 Ω resistor. What is the voltage V at the battery's ends?
