The Variable Resistor
Part of the Electricity and Magnetism section of Coddy's Physics journey. Lesson 27 of 51.
A variable resistor can be turned up or down.
R up: the current drops and the terminal voltage rises. R down: the current grows and the terminal voltage falls.
The power reaching R is largest when
R = r
the outside resistance equals the internal one.
Challenge
A battery with EMF 12 V and internal resistance 2 Ω drives a current through a variable resistor set to 2 Ω. How much power P reaches the variable resistor?
