Counterattack
Part of the Playing Real Games section of Coddy's Chess journey. Lesson 33 of 40.
Your piece is attacked. Most players retreat at once - and lose the move. Ask first: can the attacked piece move with a threat? A check that also hits a loose piece, a knight that jumps away and forks, an attack on something bigger than what they attacked. When it exists, the counterattack solves your problem and creates theirs.
