Free Fall
Part of the Mechanics section of Coddy's Physics journey. Lesson 29 of 94.
Free fall: gravity alone. Every object falls with g = 9.8 m/s² downward, whatever its mass.
Dropped from rest, after a time t:
v = g t, h = ½ g t²
The speed grows each second, so the stone falls farther each second. With up as positive, the velocity is negative.
Each second the ball falls farther, and its velocity grows by 9.8 m/s.
Challenge
A phone slips off a balcony and hits the ground 2 s later. Find the height h of the balcony.
