Loop the Loop

Part of the Mechanics section of Coddy's Physics journey. Lesson 76 of 94.

At the top of a loop the track and the weight both push the cart down, toward the centre: N + mg = mv²/r.

At the minimum speed N = 0, and the mass cancels:

v_min = √(g r)

Any slower and the cart leaves the track. Starting from rest without friction, the start must be at least 2.5r high.

A ball standing for the cart starts from rest at the top of a curved ramp 2.5 r high, rolls down and goes around a loop of radius r. At the top of the loop its velocity v points left and only its weight mg acts on it, pointing down toward the centre

At the minimum speed the weight alone pulls the cart round the top of the loop.
