Best Score and a Safe Restart

Part of the Game Rules section of Coddy's Pygame journey. Lesson 30 of 30.

The game over screen shows the best score and starts a new game on Space. best is set once, before the loop, outside reset(), so a new game keeps it.

Space now does a third job, on the game over screen:

elif pygame.time.get_ticks() - over_time > 500:
    reset()
    state = "play"

Space is the jump key, so a player is often pressing it at the moment of a crash. Without a wait the game would restart before they saw the result. Remember the time of the crash in over_time and accept Space on the game over screen only 500 ms later.

Challenge

Hard

Show the best score and restart safely.

  1. After state = "menu", set best = 0 and over_time = 0. A crash sets best = max(best, score) and over_time to now.
  2. Game over shows Game over, Best: 00120 and Press Space to play again.
  3. There, Space calls reset() and plays, only 500 ms after the crash.

Press Play and crash: your best shows, and Space starts again. Then Check.
