Habit Tracker: Add a Habit

Part of the Projects section of Coddy's Flutter journey. Lesson 33 of 36.

Everyone tracks different habits, so the app needs a way to add one. A round FloatingActionButton in the corner opens a dialog that asks for the name.

showDialog returns a Future with whatever the dialog pops. Here the dialog pops true for Add and false for Cancel, and the field writes what you type into a variable with onChanged:

String name = '';
final added = await showDialog<bool>(
  context: context,
  builder: (context) => AlertDialog(
    title: const Text('New habit'),
    content: TextField(onChanged: (value) => name = value, ...),
    actions: [...],
  ),
);
if (added != true || name.trim().isEmpty) return;

added is a bool?: tapping outside the dialog closes it with null. added != true covers Cancel and that case at once.

A new habit starts with a fresh week: List.filled(7, false). Not const [false, ...]: a const list can never change, so the first tick would stop the app.

Challenge

Hard

Add habits:

  • give the Scaffold a FloatingActionButton with Icons.add that calls _addHabit
  • write Future<void> _addHabit() async: an AlertDialog titled New habit with a TextField labelled Habit name (with autofocus: true), a Cancel TextButton and an Add FilledButton
  • after Add with a name that is not blank, add a habit with that trimmed name and an empty week

Try it yourself

      ),
      home: const HabitScreen(),
    );
  }
}
